Graham Watts will share skills in Africa with Wheels for the World

A sales engineer is set to swap his high-tech manufacturing systems job for 10 days’ customising refurbished wheelchairs in Africa. Graham Watts, who works for the Flowtube division of Flowstore Systems, will be a support technician in Uganda for Wheels for the World, an initiative which helps disabled people in countries where suitable wheelchairs are scarce. He leaves for Africa on April 10.

Graham is being supported by Flowstore’s Corporate Sponsorship programme which backs the scheme’s umbrella organisation, the international charity Through the Roof. He will be based in Kampala and the surrounding area where he will be part of a team of six who hope to furnish more than160 people with wheelc

airs – for some of the recipients it will be the first time in their lives that they have been mobile.
The field support team is made up of specialists including physiotherapists who will all work to tailor and adapt the donated redundant refurbished wheelchairs for each person’s use. Graham, who back in the UK is involved in designing lean work cells, will use his carpentry skills and practical experience of mechanical assembly to adjust and modify the wheelchairs to fit them for their best use.
